Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
