The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the US president started showing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the chief executive seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and clear truth that Christ of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the persistent defiance against Trump arise in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In all circumstances does it imply pretending the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both humility and belief, a mixture that committed US believers ought to accept.
